Fresh Picks vol. 1

Fresh Picks vol. 1

Introducing my new series: Fresh Picks! The series will focus on recent things I’ve come across that I like; things I think y’all would like too. It could be a new beauty product. Or a song that’s been on repeat. Or maybe a book I can’t put down. Right now I’m only going to post this series when I have enough items; it’s not going to be a regular thing (let’s be honest, I’m not consistent enough for that LOL).

Benefit’s Fake Up

I’ve been looking for an under-eye concealer for a couple months now and finally struck GOLD. Benefit’s Fake Up is amazing. It’s a concealer and moisturizer in 1 stick; the concealer is surrounded by moisturizer. It’s also easy to apply. I’ll do a longer blog post on this soon with picture comparisons, as well as the concealers I tried that I didn’t like. FYI Benefit is coming out with new packaging, so if you buy it, yours might look different than mine. But according to Benefit, the product is the same. Just the packaging is changing.

Uh, We what?! WeMo is a device. It’s easier to explain with a scenario that used to happen every morning. Let me set the stage for you:

[I’m rushing around like a lunatic in the morning getting ready. Then I leave for work.]

Me in car to myself: shoot (actually I say a more colorful word, but I’m trying to keep it PG here).

[I call Harry, who is hopefully still at home.]

Harry to me: no.

[I turn around, drive home, and turn straightener/curling iron/steamer off.]

This happens all of the time. I’m really bad at turning off electronics. But WeMo makes it easy. It’s a smart device that plugs into electrical outlets. It kind of looks like an adapter/converter. It can be turned on/off. Instead of plugging your straightener directly into the wall outlet, you plug it in to WeMo. In order for the straightener to be on, WeMo needs to be on. You can control WeMo via your phone. So if you accidentally leave it on, you can easily turn it off via the app. There are a couple versions of WeMo. My version (called the “insight switch”) allows you to track your energy usage. There’s also a mini version that is just for turning on/off appliances. It’s been a huge lifesaver for me (and for Harry too).

The Handmaid’s Tale (book and TV show)

I read The Handmaid’s Tale in 12th grade (my teacher, Ms. Jordan, picked awesome books – thank you for introducing me to this one). It was one of those books that I just couldn’t put down. Now I’m rereading it again while I watch the TV show and WOW. So what’s the book about (no spoilers, don’t worry. It’s just a basic overview)? It’s about a dystopian society that takes place in the US. Except it’s called Gilead. Everyone in Gilead has a role. The role of the handmaid is to help high-ranking military officials and their wives conceive children.

I’ve been watching the TV show on Hulu, which is great. I just wish that Hulu would put all episodes up at once so I can marathon them!

If you’re a fan of The Divergent Series or The Hunger Games, you’d probably like The Handmaid’s Tale! Let me know if you read it, because I’d love to hear your thoughts.

The Daily podcast by The New York Times

I’m just getting into podcasts. I know, I KNOW. I’m like 10 years behind. I’ve always listened to music in the car, tbh. But Harry got me hooked on this amazing podcast by The New York Times called The Daily. There’s a new episode every weekday. They last around 20 minutes. So why this podcast? Because it keeps me informed on what’s going on in the world. It covers the biggest news stories in a way that’s easy for everyone to understand. And personally, I find the theme music (and Michael Barbaro’s voice) soothing.

Pineapple Trays from Target

I’m a sucker for pineapple things – candles, decor, the fruit, pineapple cake, alcoholic drinks, etc. So when I saw these amazing pineapple trays at Target, I had to have them. They only cost $24.99! The trays come in 3 different sizes, so there’s a size for every decorating need. Are you as obsessed with pineapples as I am?

That’s the end of vol. 1 of Fresh Picks! I’m really excited about this new series and hope you are too! Let me know if you tried/read/listened to any of these items in the comments section.
